About Dr. Gundry

Dr. Steven Gundry

Steven R. Gundry MD, F.A.C.S., F.A.C.C., is a cum laude graduate of Yale University with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. After graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Dr. Steven Gundry completed residencies in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan and served as a Clinical Associate at the National Institutes of Health for years.

Throughout his 50-year career in medicine, Dr. Gundry has become regarded as one of America’s preeminent cardiothoracic surgeons, an innovator of life-saving medical technology, a ground-breaking medical researcher, and a best-selling author.

In 2001, Dr. Gundry met a so-called “inoperable” patient suffering from weight gain and heart disease. By making some non-traditional dietary changes to his diet — almost by chance — this man made a complete turnaround, including significant weight loss.

This experience changed the course of Dr. Gundry’s career as he learned about key nutrients deficient in the American diet, as well as some “healthy foods” that are hidden dangers for the human body – predominantly, lectin foods.

Today, Dr. Steven Gundry is the medical director for waitlist-only clinics, The International Heart and Lung Institute, and The Centers for Restorative Medicine in Palm Springs and Santa Barbara, California.

Here at these clinics, Dr. Gundry has spent the past few decades helping people restore their health by optimizing diet and lifestyle choices alone. Based on his many years of human nutrition research and regularly monitoring patients' bloodwork, Dr. Gundry founded the wellness brand Gundry MD where he tests the efficacy and scientific accuracy of every formula he collaborates on.

In 2019 Gundry MD created National Polyphenol Day, in honor of its founder Dr. Steven Gundry, celebrated every year on July 11th, which is also Dr. Gundry’s birthday. The day is intended to promote Dr. Gundry’s message about the incredible health benefits of a polyphenol-rich diet which includes foods such as high-quality olive oil, dark chocolate, berries, and artichokes. Followers are encouraged to celebrate the day by taking a shot of polyphenol rich olive oil and share their stories to social media.

Steven Gundry, MD first made his foray into publishing with the groundbreaking Dr. Gundry's Diet Evolution in 2008 and is now the author of four New York Times best selling books, including The Plant Paradox™ which details his famous lectin-free diet, Plant Paradox: Quick & Easy, Longevity Paradox, Energy Paradox, as well as two lectin-free cookbooks. Upcoming April 2025, Dr. Gundry’s The Gut-Brain Paradox book reveals the shocking connection between mental health and gut health.
